Dear SoTA
I’m Peter Hague of the Planetocracy blog.
I propose that, just as we have a NATO commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defence, we should have a comparable one for space development. I propose it be set at 1% of government spending.
Space is becoming a rapidly more important part of the world’s economy. It is also the next frontier for human expansion. The kind of country we will be in 100 years depends on the actions we take now, and is disproportionately based on the actions we take regarding space. I make a more detailed case here.
I’d appreciate any help that the SoTA community could provide. Most important would be sharing the post and/or argument with your local parliamentary candidates, as well as on social media. I want to see this idea get into the public consciousness.
There isn’t much chance of near term adoption – but we can build pressure over time. And the post also conveys certain critical ideas that ought to be more widespread, such as the exponential growth in mass to orbit, so serves an educational purpose even for those that reject it. So I’m asking for help starting the public conversation at this point.
Best wishes
Peter

Yes. 100% agree! 1% of UK government budget would be around £12 billion, close to $16 billion, which is not too far of from Nasa's 2024 budget. If anything, I think more than 1% should be spent on Space. Of course, it is too exciting for the government to fund. Alas Space innovation is left to the visionary billionaires.
